US shares advanced following Donald Trump’s victory in the Presidential election, but other regional markets came under pressure amid worries over trade tariffs.

US shares made gains in Q4 to round out a strong year for the S&P 500 index. Equities were supported by Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election, and the accompanying “Red Sweep” which saw the Republicans take control of Congress. Shares were buoyed by expectations that Trump’s policy program will lift growth, lower taxes and cut regulation. In Q4, gains were led by the communication services, information technology and consumer discretionary sectors with some of the “Magnificent Seven” stocks performing strongly. The weakest sector was materials.

Although the inflation outlook has improved, uncertainty remains as the market scrutinizes geo-political issues and the incoming administration's various economic policies that are poised to be proposed and implemented.
